چکیده

[1] A new framework for diagnosing mixing in cumulus convection is proposed, where the vertical evolution of the cloud mass flux distribution as a function of given parcel properties is viewed as a mapping process. Matrices that characterize this mapping process are constructed using a Lagrangian particle dispersion model embedded in a Large Eddy Simulation. Extending previous use of LES-diagnosed bulk entrainment and detrainment rates to test bulk plume models, the construction of these mapping matrices from LES provides a reference, against which multiple-parcel models can be compared. The framework is further applied to diagnose the response of shallow cumuli to a small temperature perturbation. Citation: Nie, J., and Z. Dependence of entrainment in shallow cumulus 1 convection on vertical velocity and distance to cloud

4 characteristics is investigated using large-eddy simulations (LES) of the re-5 sponse of shallow cumulus convection to a small-amplitude temperature per-6 turbation that is horizontally uniform and localized in height. The simulated 7 cumulus fields are analyzed in the framework of an ensemble of entraining 8 plumes by tracking a large number of Lagrangian parcels embedded in the 9 LES and gr...

A bulk mass flux convection scheme for climate model: description and moisture sensitivity

A convection scheme for climate model is developed based on Tiedtke’s (Mon Weather Rev 117:1779–1800, 1989) bulk mass flux framework and is evaluated with observational data and cloud resolving model simulation data. The main differences between the present parameterization and Tiedtke’s parameterization are the convection trigger, fractional entrainment and detrainment rate formulations, and c...

A probabilistic bulk model of coupled mixed layer and convection. Part II: Shallow convection case

The probabilistic bulk convection model (PBCM) developed in a companion paper is here extended to shallow nonprecipitating convection. The PBCMunifies the clear-sky and shallow convection boundary layer regimes by obtaining mixed-layer growth, cloud fraction, and convective inhibition from a single parameterization based on physical principles. The evolution of the shallow convection PBCM is ba...

Parameterization of the Bulk Effects of Lateral and Cloud-Top Entrainment in Transient Shallow Cumulus Clouds

A parameterization of shallow cumulus clouds for use in atmospheric general circulation models is proposed. The parameterization uses a bulk representation of an ensemble of transient clouds. Entrainment of environmental air occurs at the ascending top of the cumulus cloud and also at the lateral boundaries of the region below the top of the cloud. Complete detrainment of the air in the cloud o...

Resolved Versus Parametrized Boundary-Layer Plumes. Part I: A Parametrization-Oriented Conditional Sampling in Large-Eddy Simulations

A conditional sampling based on the combination of a passive tracer emitted at the surface and thermodynamic variables is proposed to characterise organized structures in large-eddy simulations of cloud-free and cloudy boundary layers. The sampling is evaluated against more traditional sampling of dry thermals or clouds. It enables the characterization of convective updrafts from the surface to...
